Commentary:

Art work believed to have been completed prior to Hubert’s marriage to his first wife Ava Elthyn Barnes in 1900.

Inspiration for the work may have been Tomas Moran’s 1875 oil painting of the Mountain of the Holy Cross, a prominent mountain summit in the northern Sawatch Range of the Rocky Mountains in central Colorado..

Grandfather Hubert’s painting appears like Moran’s but with the cross dark in reverse imagery on snow, rather than a snowy white cross on a spring mountain peak. Reverse side of painting reads: “Painted by Ivon’s Father – Hubert George Huntzinger”
